Syncopation is the stressing of a normally unstressed beat in a bar or the failure to sound a tone on an accented beat.
For example, in 4/4 time, the first and third beats are normally stressed. If, instead, the second and fourth beats are stressed and the first and third unstressed, the rhythm is syncopated.

Playing a note ever-so-slightly before or after a beat is another form of syncopation becuse it changes the stress on the accented beat

its often done with the upstroke...down on the first beat<mute> and up on the second beat (the "And" beat)

One-And-two-And-three-And-four... i dunno if this helps

just play along with some reggae. i wouldn't listen try it with any marley or anything cuz he tends to upstroke and didn't use barre chords as his style of play is totally different from brad's whose is more simplistic. play along with badfish, the strokes in that are very distinct.

ok if youre listening to acoustic roots try and emulate miles' style cuz kyle's style is much more complex at times and he tends to pick out root notes before hitting the chords. also...sometimes its easier to play ska so if you can get that strum pattern down just slow it down a bit and don't upstroke...then youre playin reggae

For ska strum try muting the strings wit your fret hand and with a downstoke. Then upstroke a chord. thats ska riddim man
